Coimbatore, often called 'the Manchester of South India', is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. On the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the scenic Western Ghats, the city is a major industrial center known for its factories, engineering firms, and automobile part manufacturers. Administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, the city is a district headquarters as well .Most of the urban development is outside the Municipal Corporation limits as the residential areas of the city have grown around existing industrial areas.

Even named as Kovai, this city is located in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. This 2nd largest city in the state, being a major commercial hub, is popularly called the "Manchester of South India". Geographically, the city is located at the foothills of the Nilgiri Hills and on the river bank of the river Noyyal, which flows through the western part of Tamil Nadu. Bordered on all sides by the Western Ghats, this city has got a pleasant climate and peaceful atmosphere. This important manufacturing and textile centre of the country is even listed among the fastest growing Indian cities. Coimbatore city has got many places of visit that attracts tourists from all over the state. These include waterfalls, hill stations, forest areas, dams as well as a number of places of worship. To name a few of them in and around the city. the city is situated on the banks of the river Noyyal, Coimbatore existed even prior to the 2nd or 3rd century AD by Karikalan, the first of the early Cholas. When Kongunadu fell to the British along with the rest of the state, its name was changed to Coimbatore and it is by this name that it is known today, except in Tamil, in which it is called Kovai.
