It's the home of the monumental main shrine hall supported by bright red lacquered pillars and decorated with 300 year-old silk thangkas, the sacred Golden Stupa encrusted with turquoise, coral, and amber in the adjoining reliquary temple, the peaceful residential courtyards where over 300 lamas and novice monks engage in rigorous philosophical debate and daily chanting rituals, the tranquil river valley viewpoints looking back at Gangtok city cascading down opposite ridges, and an intensely peaceful, deeply mystical atmosphere filled with the resonating hum of long Tibetan copper trumpets (Dungchen) and morning incense.

The Golden Stupa & Karma Shri Nalanda Institute

In the Golden Stupa hall directly behind the main monastery stands the 13 foot-tall reliquary stupa crafted from pure gold and studded with ancient precious gems, preserving the sacred remains of the 16th Karmapa.

Opposite the main courtyard stands the Karma Shri Nalanda Institute, a renowned monastic college where hundreds of Buddhist scholar monks pursue advanced 9 year degrees in Buddhist philosophy and metaphysics.

Sacred Vajra Crown Ceremony & Cham Dances

The Black Hat Ceremony: Rumtek is historically famous for the sacred Vajra Crown (Black Hat) ceremony, woven from the hair of 100,000 dakinis, believed to liberate anyone who beholds it.

Annual Masked Dances: In May/June (Saga Dawa) and February (Tibetan New Year), lamas in fierce deity masks perform ancient Cham dances recreating the victory of Dharma over evil.
