It's the home of the dramatic Kyongnosla Waterfall where glacial meltwater plunges over dark vertical mountain rocks right beside the highway, the scenic alpine nature trails lined with over 25 species of native rhododendrons including Rhododendron campanulatum and Rhododendron niveum (the state tree of Sikkim), the colorful carpets of blue poppies (Meconopsis), primulas, gentians, and wild aconitum blooming across high meadows from May to July, the peaceful birdwatching viewpoints alive with monals, laughingthrushes, and snow partridges, and an intensely peaceful, deeply refreshing high altitude wilderness atmosphere that leaves every mountain traveler in awe.

Located 31 km east of Gangtok city center along the road to Nathula Pass, it sits 7 km before Tsomgo Lake, 23 km from Nathula, and 150 km from Siliguri / NJP, accessible by authorized 4x4 tourist vehicles holding mandatory Protected Area Permits (PAP).

The 10,500 Foot Rhododendron Reserve & Blue Poppies

Between May and August, the sanctuary transforms into a living botanical canvas as alpine meadows burst into brilliant bloom with rare Himalayan blue poppies, yellow primulas, and wild ground orchids.

Dense subalpine forests of silver fir, birch, and mountain juniper shelter rare medicinal herbs including Picrorhiza kurroa (Kutki) and endangered wildlife like the Himalayan musk deer.

Truth is, stopping beside the roaring Kyongnosla Waterfall while mist swirls through blooming rhododendrons will take your breath away.

Kyongnosla Waterfall & Tsomgo Lake Connection

Kyongnosla Waterfall Stop: A prominent road bend features a viewing deck for the powerful Kyongnosla Waterfall, where travelers enjoy hot mountain tea and noodles while admiring the cascading torrent.

Tsomgo Lake Gateway: Located just 7 km higher along the road, sacred Tsomgo Lake marks the upper biological boundary of the sanctuary at 12,310 feet.

The Complete Alpine Circuit: Depart Gangtok (7:30 AM) -> Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary & Waterfall (9:00 AM) -> Tsomgo Lake (10:00 AM to 11:30 AM) -> Nathula Pass border visit (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM) -> return to Gangtok by 5:00 PM.
