Saheliyon ki-Bari, translating romantically as the "Garden of the Maidens," blossoms as an enchanting royal horticultural masterpiece along the northern banks of Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur in Rajasthan.
Designed and constructed between 1710 and 1734 AD by Maharana Sangram Singh II as a private leisure great place for his royal queen and the 48 young maidens who accompanied her to Mewar, this verdant oasis is celebrated globally for its ingenious 18th century gravity operated marble fountains and lush rose pavilions.
It's the home of central lotus pools flanked by monolithic white marble elephants spouting crystal water arcs, the famous Sawan Bhadon rain fountains that recreate the acoustic sound of monsoon downpours without electric pumps, shaded bougainvillea arbors, and the historic Royal Museum displaying Mewar dynasty heirlooms.
It represents a rich royal botanical sanctuary where ingenious hydraulic physics, exquisite Rajasthani marble sculpture, whispering water melodies, and graceful desert garden aesthetics unite in Udaipur.
Located on Saheli Marg just 4 km north of the City Palace complex, it sits 5 km from Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) and 23 km from Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR), easily accessible by auto rickshaw, tourist taxi, or city bus.
When the princess of Mewar married, she was accompanied by a royal retinue of 48 maidens to ensure her comfort and companionship.
Maharana Sangram Singh II personally sketched the layout of Saheliyon ki-Bari to provide the queen and her ladies with an exclusive sanctuary shielded from royal court politics, filled with fragrant jasmine, roses, and sparkling water bodies.
Truth is, the entire garden was engineered as an open air cooling retreat where the royal women could read poetry, bathe in secluded marble pools, and celebrate the arrival of the desert monsoons.
The fountains of Saheliyon ki-Bari are a marvel of pre modern engineering, operating entirely without mechanical pumps or electricity.
Water is drawn from the elevated reservoir of nearby Fateh Sagar Lake through subterranean stone aqueducts, generating natural hydrostatic pressure that propels water jets high into the air through finely calibrated marble and copper nozzles.
Sawan Bhadon Fountains: Encircling the central marble pavilion, hundreds of microscopic spray jets create a fine mist called "Bin Badal Barsaat" (Rain without Clouds), mimicking the soothing sound and cooling breeze of a torrential monsoon shower.
Central Reservoir: The main lotus pond is framed by four beautifully sculpted white marble elephants standing at the cardinal points, spraying elegant water arches across floating pink lotus blossoms.
Royal Museum: Located inside the garden compound, this small heritage gallery exhibits rare Mewar miniature paintings, royal hunting artifacts, antique palanquins, and traditional court utensils.
After enjoying the refreshing fountains of Saheliyon ki-Bari, take a short stroll to the lakeside promenade of Fateh Sagar Lake, visit the royal cenotaphs of Ahar, or explore the historic halls of City Palace.
Reaching Saheliyon ki-Bari in Udaipur is quick and simple across Udaipur in Rajasthan.
