Bassein Fort in Thane (celebrated historically as Fortaleza de Sao Sebastiao de Baçaim, one of Western India's most colossal, architecturally imposing, and historically dramatic 16th century Portuguese maritime fortresses, sprawling across 110 coastal acres at the mouth of the Ulhas River and Vasai Creek), located in the coastal sub district of Thane in Maharashtra, stands as a grand monument to European colonial warfare and Maratha military triumph.
Constructed in 1536 AD by Portuguese Governor Nuno da Cunha following the Treaty of Bassein with Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, this massive fortified township served for over two centuries as the northern administrative headquarters of the Portuguese Estado da India (governing Mumbai, Salsette, Daman, and Chaul) until it was heroically conquered in 1739 AD by Maratha General Chimaji Appa (Peshwa Baji Rao I's valiant brother) after the epic Battle of Vasai.
It's the home of ten colossal stone watch bastions (including Nossa Senhora dos Remedios and Sao Sebastiao) offering panoramic views of the Arabian Sea surf, the imposing Land Gate (Porta da Terra) and Sea Gate (Porta do Mar) carved with Portuguese royal armillary spheres, the atmospheric ruins of seven 16th century Franciscan and Jesuit churches featuring soaring arched bell towers, vaulted chancels, and weathered tombstone inscriptions, the historic Town Hall and Governor's Palace (Palacio do Governador), the sacred Maratha Vajreshwari victory temple and Chimaji Appa memorial statue, the surrounding lush coconut palm groves and wild bougainvillea trails, and an intensely evocative, romantic atmosphere where sea breezes whistling through ancient Gothic stone arches enchant history lovers and filmmakers alike.
It represents a rich 16th century Portuguese colonial architecture legacy, 1739 Maratha military conquest history, and coastal heritage where sea bastions, Jesuit cathedral ruins, Chimaji Appa memorials, and Vasai creek waterways unite in Bassein Fort Thane.
Located in Vasai village along the coast, it sits just 5 km from Vasai Road Railway Station (Western Suburban Line), 30 km from Thane City Centre, 45 km from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai (BOM), and 12 km from Suruchi Beach, easily accessible by local suburban train, auto rickshaw, state transport bus, or private vehicle via NH 48.
Engineered with impregnable black basalt masonry, Bassein Fort housed over 2,000 Portuguese grandees, noble families, and garrison soldiers inside its self contained walled township.
In 1739, Chimaji Appa led a daring Maratha assault, tunneling under the ramparts with explosive mines and breaching the fort walls after a grueling three month siege, securing the northern Konkan coastline for the Maratha Empire.
Truth is, walking through the soaring stone nave of the ruined Church of Saint Joseph while listening to distant ocean waves is an unforgettable step back in time.
Cathedral & Church Ruins: The ruins of the Jesuit Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Franciscan Monastery, and Dominican convent display ornate Manueline and Baroque stone carvings.
Chimaji Appa Memorial: A grand equestrian bronze statue and victory memorial honouring General Chimaji Appa's historic victory over colonial forces.
Filming Destination: The evocative stone ruins have featured in numerous international music videos (such as Coldplay's Hymn for the Weekend) and Bollywood movies.
Coastal Circuit: Bassein Fort is easily combined with sunset visits to Suruchi Beach, Bhuigaon Beach, and the thermal hot springs at Vajreshwari.
After exploring the historical ramparts of Bassein Fort, relax at Suruchi Beach, visit the hot springs of Vajreshwari, or explore scenic Upvan Lake in Thane.
