Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary in Solapur (celebrated across India as the Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary and Nannaj Maldhok Wildlife Reserve, one of the subcontinent's most critical, ecologically vital, and sprawling dry grassland ecosystems, spanning over 1,222 square kilometers across the semi arid Deccan plateau), located in the rural belt of Solapur in Maharashtra, stands as a supreme great place for critically endangered avian fauna.
Notified in 1979 under the Wildlife Protection Act to rescue the majestic Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps, locally known as Maldhok) from the brink of global extinction, this vast sanctuary protects open scrub grasslands, thorn forests, and rocky Deccan plains that support extraordinary semi arid biodiversity.
It's the home of the legendary heavy flying Great Indian Bustard strutting with dignified grace across golden savannah grass, hundreds of graceful Blackbucks (Indian antelopes) leaping across open meadow horizons, packs of stealthy Indian Grey Wolves (Canis lupus pallipes), nimble Indian Foxes, Golden Jackals, Striped Hyenas, the Indian Monitor Lizard, over 150 resident and migratory bird species including Montagu's Harriers, Eurasian Marsh Harriers, Short toed Snake Eagles, Indian Rollers, Black Drongos, and Chestnut bellied Sandgrouses, the Forest Department Nannaj Interpretation Centre with educational wildlife exhibits and high powered watchtowers, and an intensely quiet, expansive wilderness atmosphere where golden dawn sunrises over whispering savannah grasses reveal raw Deccan wildlife in its purest natural state.
It represents a rich semi arid grassland conservation mission, critically endangered avian ecology, and Deccan plateau wildlife safaris where Great Indian Bustards, Blackbuck herds, Indian Grey Wolves, and Nannaj watchtowers unite in Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary Solapur.
Located in Nannaj village, it sits just 22 km from Solapur City Centre, 24 km from Solapur Junction Railway Station (SUR), 28 km from Solapur Airport (SSE), 260 km from Pune, and 85 km from Pandharpur, easily accessible by private taxi, rental car, or local bus via Solapur Barshi Road.
The Great Indian Bustard is an iconic flagship bird species of Indian grasslands, recognized by its tall ostrich like gait, black crown, and brownish gold plumage.
The Nannaj core grassland enclosure provides protected breeding grounds where these grand birds nest safely on undisturbed stony ground during post monsoon months.
Truth is, spotting a grand Maldhok through binoculars from the Nannaj watchtower as the morning mist lifts over the savanna is a rare wildlife thrill.
Blackbucks & Wolves: The sanctuary hosts spirited herds of blackbuck antelopes that graze alongside elusive Indian wolves and desert foxes.
Winter Migratory Raptors: From November to February, hundreds of Eurasian harriers, kestrels, and buzzards arrive, making Nannaj a birdwatcher's paradise.
Watchtower Viewpoints: Two elevated forest watchtowers at Nannaj provide 360 degree sweeping vistas of grazing blackbucks and open grassland horizons.
District Eco Circuit: A safari at Nannaj pairs effortlessly with visits to Solapur Bhuikot Fort, Siddheshwar Temple, and the pilgrimage hub of Pandharpur.
After observing wildlife at the Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, explore Solapur Fort, visit the sacred Siddheshwar Temple, or shop for famous Solapuri textiles.
