Tribal Cultural Museum (managed and curated by the Tribal Research & Training Institute, Government of Maharashtra) along Queen's Garden Road in Pune (celebrated globally across anthropological research, indigenous arts, and cultural preservation as Western India's premier archival showcase of Maharashtra's 47 scheduled tribal communities, including the Warli, Gond, Bhil, Korku, Katkari, Madia Gond, Kolam, and Pawara tribes), world famous for its authentic collection of original Warli wall art, hand carved wooden Bohada dance masks, bamboo Tarpa musical instruments, traditional hunting tools, tribal silver jewelry, and life sized reconstructed tribal dwellings), located in the cultural hub of Pune in Maharashtra, stands as Pune's premier ethnographic museum.
Established in 1962 to document and honor the sustainable forest lifestyles, sacred rituals, and folklore of Maharashtra's indigenous Adivasi communities, the museum exhibits over 2,000 authentic artifacts across multiple thematic galleries.
It's the home of the sacred wooden marriage pillars (Kamb) carved by the Korku tribe, the striking terracotta votive figurines of the Madia Gonds, the giant bamboo wind instruments used during harvest dances in the Sahyadris, the intricate brass dokra casting ornaments, and an intensely peaceful, deeply informative gallery atmosphere filled with earth tones and indigenous craftsmanship.
It represents a rich Maharashtra tribal heritage apex, TRTI ethnographic research, and educational tourism where Warli paintings, ritual dance masks, bamboo craftwork, and Pune heritage circuits unite in Tribal Museum.
Located in the Koregaon Park Bund Garden precinct along Queen's Garden Road, it sits 2 km from Pune Railway Station (PUNE), 8 km from Pune International Airport (PNQ), 4 km from Shaniwar Wada, 3 km from Aga Khan Palace, and 5 km from Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple, easily reached by city bus, taxi, or auto rickshaw.
The museum displays authentic Warli folk paintings created with rice paste and natural red earth binders, depicting the sacred Mother Goddess Palaghat, harvest circles, and village festivities.
Adjacent galleries house striking wooden Bohada festival masks representing mythical deities, forest spirits, and animals worn during night long tribal theatrical performances in Palghar and Thane.
Truth is, observing the exquisite detailing of hand carved wooden marriage pillars and Tarpa horns will give you a profound appreciation for India's ancient tribal wisdom.
