Tiger's Leap, known locally in Marathi as Waghdari ("Tiger Valley"), perches dramatically over a 650 meter (2,130 foot) sheer vertical precipice in the Sahyadri mountains of Kurwande village in Lonavala in Maharashtra.
Named for its striking natural volcanic basalt rock formation that resembles a ferocious tiger leaping into the deep abyss of the Ulhas Valley and Bhor Ghat, this iconic clifftop vantage point is celebrated as one of Maharashtra's most thrilling and striking natural wonders.
It's the home of exhilarating Echo Point reverberations shouting across canyon walls, powerful upward aerodynamic winds that catch flying straw, roaring monsoon waterfalls cascading down dark basalt cliffs, steaming stalls of hot ginger chai and roasted spiced corn (bhutta), and stunning sunrise spectacles.
It represents a rich mountain viewpoint where dramatic Sahyadri cliff geology, refreshing Western Ghats monsoon showers, lively roadside snacking culture, and unforgettable mountain valley vistas unite in Pune district.
Located along the scenic Aamby Valley Road just past Bushi Dam, it sits 8 km south of Lonavala railway station, 68 km northwest of Pune International Airport (PNQ), and 100 km from Mumbai via the Mumbai Pune Expressway, easily reached by private car, hired taxi, or motorcycle.
When observed from the edge of the adjacent mountain spur, the jagged overhang of dark volcanic basalt protrudes boldly into the sky, mirroring the silhouette of a tiger mid spring.
Below the cantilevered rock ledge plunges a dizzying 650 meter abyss down into the dense forest valleys of Waghdari, where the headwaters of the Ulhas River carve through ancient volcanic strata.
Truth is, the sheer verticality of the canyon creates fierce upward wind currents that blow moisture and clouds rapidly up the cliff face, giving visitors the sensation of standing inside a moving cloud.
The Echo Phenomenon: The concave rock structure of the surrounding mountain amphitheater is a natural sound mirror. Shouting your name towards the gorge produces multiple clear, booming echoes bouncing between the peaks.
Monsoon Waterfalls: From June to September, heavy torrential rains transform the mountain face into a spectacle of dozen rushing waterfalls tumbling over black basalt ledges, creating misty rainbow prisms in the sunlight.
Hot Chai & Kanda Bhajji: The cliffside pathway is dotted with rustic local stalls serving piping hot clay cups of masala chai, crispy fried onion pakoras (kanda bhajjis), roasted corn cobs rubbed with lemon and chili, and famous Lonavala peanut chikki.
Sunset Horizon: As evening approaches, the golden sun dips behind the distant Konkan mountain ranges, bathing the entire valley in rich shades of purple, crimson, and gold.
After taking in the majestic heights of Tiger's Leap, drive a few minutes further to visit Lion's Point, enjoy the cascading water steps of Bushi Dam, or explore the ancient rock cut Buddhist caverns of Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves.
Reaching Tiger's Leap (Waghdari) in Lonavala is simple and scenic from Mumbai and Pune across Lonavala in Maharashtra.
