Sage Markandeya Legend & The 24 Stone Temples

According to Puranic lore, 16 year-old Sage Markandeya embraced the Shiva Lingam here as Yama, the god of death, cast his noose; pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and vanquished death, granting Markandeya eternal youth.

The site originally contained a cluster of 24 distinct stone shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Shakti, featuring exquisite shikharas built with dry masonry interlocking sandstone blocks without mortar.

Annual Mahashivratri Yatra: During the month of Magha (February/March), over 300,000 pilgrims assemble for the 7 day Markanda Fair, participating in river dips, deep daan rituals, and round the-clock Shiva pujas.
