Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple in Malvan (celebrated across the Konkan coast as Inamdar Achra's sacred spiritual heart, a 350 year-old historic Hemadpanthi Shiva shrine granted religious inam estates by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in 1684 AD and later renovated by Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre), located in the quiet coastal village of Achra near Malvan in Maharashtra, stands as a prime pilgrimage sanctuary.
Believed to have been consecrated originally by Lord Rama on his journey southward to Lanka where he established a Shivalingam in penance, the present grand stone and-timber architectural temple complex features an ornate wooden sabhamandap, massive stone deepstambhas, and carved teak pillars showcasing Maratha and Konkani craftsmanship.
It's the home of the sacred self manifested Shivalingam enshrined in the cool basalt stone sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha), the intricate wooden ceiling panels depicting mythological scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the large sacred temple stepwell pond (Pushkarini / Bawadi) surrounded by laterite stone steps, the massive annual Mahashivratri and Gudi Padwa chariot rathotsav festivals attracting tens of thousands of coastal devotees, the quiet temple courtyard shaded by ancient banyan and coconut palms, and an intensely peaceful, spiritually charged atmosphere where the melodious clanging of brass bells and continuous Vedic chants transport pilgrims into deep devotional calm.
It represents a rich 350 year-old Maratha religious patronage, Hemadpanthi stone masonry, and coastal Shaivite heritage where consecrated Shivalingams, wooden sabhamandaps, chariot festivals, and sacred Bawadi tanks unite in Rameshwar Temple Malvan.
Located in Achra village, it sits just 22 km north of Malvan town centre, 25 km from Kankavli Railway Station (Konkan Railway), 40 km from Sindhudurg Airport at Chipi (SDW), and 130 km from Kolhapur, easily accessible by MSRTC state transport bus, auto rickshaw, or private vehicle via the coastal state highway.
In 1684 AD, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj endowed the entire village of Achra as a tax free perpetual Inam estate to support the daily rituals and feeding of pilgrims at Rameshwar Temple.
Later in the 18th century, famed Maratha naval chief Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre renovated the stone mandapa and erected the soaring stone lamp tower (Deepstambha).
Truth is, entering the cool, incense scented wooden pillared hall while the morning aarti bells resonate across the courtyard is deeply touching.
Sacred Temple Tank (Bawadi): The large freshwater stepwell outside the temple courtyard provides holy water for temple abhishekam rituals and festive ceremonial baths.
Teak Wood Carvings: The expansive prayer hall ceiling features masterfully sculpted floral medallions, dwarapalas, and intricate mythological tableaux.
Annual Rathotsav Fair: During Mahashivratri, the deity's silver palanquin (Palkhi) and grand wooden chariot (Ratha) are pulled through village lanes with grand festivities.
Achra Coastal Circuit: A temple visit pairs smoothly with quiet strolls on Achra Beach, tours of Sindhudurg Fort, and exploring Malvan's scuba diving reefs.
After seeking blessings at Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple, visit clean Achra Beach, discover historic Sindhudurg Fort, or sample local Konkani sweets in Malvan.
