Kuttanad

Kuttanad (celebrated internationally as the famous 'Rice Bowl of Kerala' and one of the only places on Earth where agriculture is practiced up to 3 meters below sea level under a globally recognized FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System), situated across the deltaic wetlands of Vembanad Lake just 15 km east of Alleppey in Kerala, is one of the world's most extraordinary, ecologically unique, and scenic backwater farming landscapes.

Formed by the confluence of four major perennial rivers (Pamba, Meenachil, Achankovil, and Manimala) emptying into the massive Vembanad Lake lagoon, this vast 1,100 square-kilometer agrarian wetland is crisscrossed by an intricate maze of canals, dykes, bunds, and waterways where lush emerald paddy fields (Padasekharams) sit lower than the adjacent river water levels, sustained by historic bio drainage water management, giant water wheels (Chakram), and modern pumping mechanisms (Petti and Para).

FAO Globally Important Below Sea-Level Farming

Kuttanad is one of only two places in the world (alongside the Netherlands) practicing large scale below sea-level farming, officially recognized by the UN FAO.

Farmers construct earthen dykes around flooded riverbeds (Kayal lands) and pump out excess water to cultivate high yield varieties of red and white rice.

Truth is, cruising along a canal where the water level in your boat is higher than the green paddy fields on either side is a surreal experience.
