Alleppey Beach

Stretching along the Arabian Sea coastline just 2 km west of the town center, Alleppey Beach (Alappuzha Beach) is a vibrant seaside promenade steeped in maritime history in Kerala. Known for its expansive silver sands, historic 150 year old sea bridge ruins, and coastal lighthouse, this beach forms the premier sunset gathering spot for travelers visiting Alleppey.

Truth is, while Alleppey is world renowned for its backwater canals, the shoreline offers a captivating glimpse into Kerala nineteenth century port legacy. Built in 1862 by Captain Hugh Crawford, the historic sea pier (Kadalpaalam) once stretched over a thousand feet into the sea, allowing ocean cargo ships to load coir, spices, and teak wood directly from the shore.

Today, the weathered teakwood and iron skeletal remains of the pier jutting out into crashing waves provide a dramatic visual subject for photographers and artists. The wide beach park area features manicured lawns, children play facilities, and paved seaside walking tracks. Visiting the beach pairs naturally with Marari Beach and spiritual darshan at Mullakkal Temple.

Alappuzha Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

Dominating the beach skyline is the iconic Alappuzha Lighthouse, constructed in 1862 with distinctive red and white spiral bands. Climbing the spiraling 100 foot staircase leads to a viewing gallery offering 360 degree panoramas of the azure Arabian Sea, coconut tree canopies, and backwater channels.

At the base of the tower sits a curated Maritime Museum displaying vintage oil lamps, historic optic lenses, brass navigational instruments, and archival nautical charts that guided Indian Ocean mariners for over a century before traveling to Kuttanad.

Vijay Beach Park, Sand Art, and Street Food

Adjacent to the main shore lies Vijay Beach Park and Sea View Park, featuring amusement rides, toy trains, and boating ponds for families with young children. The beach regularly hosts the annual Alappuzha Beach Festival during New Year week, featuring sand sculpture competitions, music concerts, and food fairs.

Local beachside vendors serve delicious Malabar street snacks, including spicy fried tapioca chips, crispy banana fritters (pazham pori), sweet pickled mangoes, and hot cardamom chai. Savoring hot snacks while watching the golden sun sink into the Arabian Sea is a cherished ritual.

Beach Timings, Lighthouse Hours, and Practical Advice

Alleppey Beach is open 24 hours daily with free public entry. The Alappuzha Lighthouse is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a nominal entry fee of approximately 20 rupees for adults.

The beach is easily accessible from Alappuzha Railway Station (just 1 km away) and the central bus stand via auto rickshaws or local buses. Combine your sunset beach stroll with a relaxing morning houseboat cruise on Vembanad Lake or Alappuzha Houseboats.
