For most of the year, Tulian Lake remains completely frozen under deep snow and ice sheets. Even during peak midsummer months from July to August, large icebergs drift across the turquoise surface, creating an extraordinary polar landscape. The lake is fed directly by glacial snowmelt cascading down sheer granite gullies, surrounded by high alpine meadows carpeted with colorful wildflowers like Himalayan poppies, primulas, and potentillas.
Reaching Tulian Lake is one of the most rewarding day and overnight trekking adventures in the Kashmir valley. The 16 km trail begins from Pahalgam town, ascending steeply through dense pine and silver fir forests toward Baisaran meadow before climbing rocky moraines to the lake basin. Trekking to this pristine glacial lake is considered the crowning highlight when holidaying across Pahalgam, offering seasoned hikers unforgettable mountain scenery.
The trek from Pahalgam to Tulian Lake spans roughly sixteen kilometers round trip with an altitude gain of over 1,500 meters.
