Chandanwari

Chandanwari is a striking mountain valley and sacred pilgrimage base located sixteen kilometers northeast of Pahalgam in Anantnag district. Perched at an altitude of 2,895 meters (9,500 feet) along the gushing Sheshnag stream (East Lidder River), this dramatic alpine valley is world renowned as the official starting point and roadhead for the sacred annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.

The centerpiece attraction of Chandanwari during spring and early summer is its natural snow bridge that spans completely across the roaring torrents of the Sheshnag torrent. Travelers can step directly onto packed snow even during warm May and June days, enjoying wooden sledge rides, snowball fights, and snow photography surrounded by towering pine covered mountain slopes.

From Chandanwari, the 32 km traditional pilgrimage trail ascends steeply toward Pissu Top, Sheshnag Lake, Mahagunas Pass, and Panjtarni before reaching the holy Amarnath Cave. Outside the July to August pilgrimage period, the valley works as a serene nature great place for day trippers traveling along the scenic Lidder river road. A visit here is a central highlight when touring Pahalgam, easily paired with stops at Betaab Valley and Aru Valley on the same day.

Amarnath Yatra Trailhead & Pilgrim Logistics

During the official Amarnath Yatra, Chandanwari transforms into an active base camp with security control rooms, medical centers, registered pony and palanquin (palki) stands, and massive community langars serving free hot meals. Devotees begin their steep 3 km climb up the legendary Pissu Top ridge directly from the Chandanwari barrier.

Snow Sledging, Taxi Fares & Refreshments

Local union taxis from Pahalgam taxi stand operate round trip sightseeing tours to Chandanwari, Betaab Valley, and Aru Valley for regulated package fares between 1,800 and 2,500 rupees per vehicle. Sledge operators at the snow bridge charge around 300 to 500 rupees per ride, and local stalls serve hot tea, sweet corn, and kahwa along the riverbank.
