Geeta Mandir

Geeta Mandir (also revered as the Bhagavad Gita Temple) is an auspicious roadside Hindu temple situated near the famous Ban Ganga check post along the initial foothills trail in Katra, Reasi district. Dedicated to Lord Krishna and the eternal philosophical teachings of the sacred Bhagavad Gita, this peaceful temple is an essential spiritual rest and prayer stopover for millions of pilgrims embarking on the 13 kilometer holy trek toward the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan.

The central sanctum enshrines an exquisite marble idol of Lord Krishna in his Vishvarupa and chariot driver form delivering the sacred Gita updesh to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The interior walls and parikrama hallways are decorated with marble slabs intricately inscribed with all seven hundred Sanskrit verses (shlokas) of the Bhagavad Gita, along with colorful artistic reliefs illustrating legendary scenes from the Mahabharata.

Pilgrims starting their uphill climb toward the holy cave frequently pause here to seek divine blessings for physical strength, mental resolve, and safe passage across the steep Trikuta mountain tracks. The temple courtyard is shaded by mature peepal and banyan trees, offering a tranquil sanctuary with free filtered drinking water and clean resting benches. Visiting this temple is an integral devotional highlight when visiting Katra, easily accessed right before Ban Ganga bridge.

Gita Jayanti & Janmashtami Celebrations

The temple comes alive with vibrant devotional fervor during Janmashtami in August and Gita Jayanti in December. Devotees participate in day long continuous Gita path recitations, classical bhajan kirtans, and floral decoration ceremonies, followed by distribution of holy prasad to passing yatra pilgrims.

Darshan Timings, Facilities & Yatra Tips

Geeta Mandir remains open twenty four hours a day during the peak pilgrimage season to accommodate yatris hiking day and night. Daily morning Aarti is performed at 6:00 AM and evening Sandhya Aarti at 7:00 PM. Entry is completely free. Shoe storage stands and small dharamshala rest spaces are maintained for weary travelers.
