Bhairon Mandir

Bhairon Mandir (also revered as the Bhairon Nath Temple) is an ancient and indispensable Hindu pilgrimage shrine situated on a rugged mountain crest at Bhairon Ghati above Katra in Reasi district. Perched at a commanding elevation of 2,012 meters (6,600 feet) on the Trikuta mountain range, this sacred temple stands roughly 1.5 kilometers uphill from the holy Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan.

According to ancient Hindu scripture and regional folklore, the pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi is considered incomplete and fruitless without offering final prayers at Bhairon Mandir. Mythological legends recount that the tantrik Bhairon Nath pursued Goddess Vaishnavi up the Trikuta hills. When he refused to desist, the Goddess assumed her fierce form of Mahakali and severed his head, which flew and landed on this high mountain peak. Upon his dying repentance, the compassionate Goddess granted him salvation and blessed him that no yatra to her shrine would be complete without paying homage at his temple.

The sanctum sanctorum enshrines the sacred rock face (pindi) of Baba Bhairon Nath, where devotees apply holy sacred ash (vibhuti) and offer black threads and sweets. Today, reaching the high mountain temple has been made effortless thanks to the modern Swiss passenger cable car ropeway, which carries pilgrims from Bhawan up to Bhairon Ghati within five minutes. Visiting this high summit shrine is the mandatory final devotional step when journeying to Katra, offering incredible aerial views across the deep green mountain valleys.

Passenger Cable Car Ropeway & Trekking Track

The state of the art passenger ropeway operated by the Shrine Board transports up to eight hundred passengers per hour between Bhawan and Bhairon Mandir. Tickets cost only 100 rupees per person for a round trip. Alternatively, physically active pilgrims can hike the steep 1.5 km paved and covered mountain stairway in approximately 45 minutes.

Darshan Timings, Facilities & Pilgrimage Etiquette

Bhairon Mandir remains open twenty four hours a day with free darshan. Morning Aarti takes place at 5:30 AM and evening Aarti at 7:00 PM. The Shrine Board maintains clean viewpoints, cloakrooms, free hot drinking water, and prasad counters along the temple terrace.
