Vaishno Devi Yatra

Located in Trikuta hills, 13 Kms from Katra at a height of 1560 m above sea level with shimmering clouds and thinning air, this town is the holy cave temple of Mata Vaishnodevi, with spirituality and vibrancy lingering in the atmosphere. Revered and highly believed in, thousands of Pilgrims visit each year to seek blessings and show unflinching faith in this temple. Vaishno Devi is a religious trekking destination where pilgrims walk about 13 km uphill to reach the little caves which is among one of the 108 Shakti Peetha.

Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani is a manifestation of Durga, a Goddess according to Hindu mythology. The trek itself is very enjoyable, though it might be a little difficult for kids and elderly people. However, ponies and palanquins are available by various vendors to take you there at the top. The whole way is decently paved with lots of shops selling snacks, food items and various religious goods. The pilgrims show their dedication and enthusiasm by shouting slogans and singing songs in the praise of Maa Vaishnavi all along the road. Overall, a great place if you are inclined towards both Hinduism and nature.

Places to Visit In Katra

Katra offers a revered collection of holy cave shrines, sacred mountain bathing ghats, aerial passenger ropeways, and limestone waterfalls:

1. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan & Holy Pindies Cave Sanctum (5,200 ft)

Perched inside a natural mountain cave at an altitude of 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Range, the Vaishno Devi Bhawan is the sanctum sanctorum where the Goddess resides in the form of three natural rock deities (*Holy Pindies*). The Shrine Board provides round the clock darshan facilities, free langar kitchens, modern bathing ghats, and dedicated resting halls along with covered shed pathways.

2. Banganga River & Sacred Bathing Ghat (Traditional Yatra Starting Point)

Located just 1.5 km from Katra town center, Banganga is a sacred freshwater stream created when the Goddess shot an arrow (*baan*) into the rocky earth to quench the thirst of her steed (Langoorvir). Pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip in its crystal clear bathing ghats before passing the official Yatra registration checkpost to begin their uphill pilgrimage.
