Right at the southern fringe of Kaziranga National Park in Assam, the Kakochang Waterfall drops over wooded rocky shelves amid dense greenery. It's a small, honest cascade turned into a popular picnic halt for anyone touring the one horned rhino country.
Honest warning first. Kakochang is not a roaring Niagara style spectacle, and in lean dry months the flow thins out visibly. Locals will tell you the prettiest time to arrive is right after heavy monsoon rain, when the plunge runs full. Most visitors fold it into a Kaziranga National Park day trip, usually after an early morning elephant or jeep safari.
The route earns its own sightseeing. Bokakhat town, the gateway to the western Kaziranga sector, spreads tea gardens, satras and the sugar sweet called peda/pera. A few kilometres up, the Numaligarh tea belt crowds the roadsides with dense bush. And the ancient archaeological mound of Deopahar, with broken temple stones and sculptures, sits beside the lattice road that leads toward the falls.
Mind you, road conditions along the unpaved stretches pale after monsoon downpours. Ask at Bokakhat for the current approachable track and plan a two hour window from the park. Photographers, though, love the rainy season churn when the cascade spreads across its rocky ledge.
The falls sit a short drive from the western edge of Kaziranga National Park.
