Namgyal Monastery, also celebrated as the personal monastery of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, is the spiritual epicenter of Tibetan Buddhism in exile, located inside the Tsuglagkhang Complex in McLeod Ganj above Dharamshala. Founded originally in 16th century Tibet, it is the most visited Buddhist sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh.
Inside the main prayer hall stands a gilded 3 metre high statue of Shakyamuni Buddha flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava. Monks chant resonant mantras in deep harmonic overtone throat chanting, while red robed lamas perform intricate sand mandalas and ritual butter sculptures.
