Kangra Fort, historically known as Nagarkot or Kot Kangra, is the oldest surviving fort in India and the largest in the Himalayas, built by the royal Katoch dynasty over 3,500 years ago. sitting high on a sheer hillock 20 km from Dharamshala, it is a grand citadel in Himachal Pradesh.
Guarded by steep vertical cliffs dropping into the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers, the fortress sprawls across 463 acres. Visitors enter through seven formidable historical gates, including the Ranjit Singh Gate, Jahangiri Darwaza, and the narrow Ahani Darwaza built to halt war elephants.
Truth is, at the highest citadel point sit the ruins of the Ambika Devi Temple and Lakshmi Narayan shrines. At the base entrance, the Maharaja Sansar Chandra Museum displays royal Katoch weapons, silver coins, and miniature paintings, accompanied by audio guide tours.
