Masrur Rock Cut Temples, popularly hailed as the Ellora of the North, is an extraordinary 8th century monolithic rock cut complex carved out of a single natural sandstone ridge, located 43 km from Dharamshala. Facing the snowcapped Dhauladhar peaks in Himachal Pradesh, it is an historic landmark.
The complex comprises 15 monolithic rock hewn temples arranged symmetrically around a central sanctum. Carved in classic North Indian Nagara style, the temple reflects gracefully into a large rectangular stone stepped water tank (kund), creating an unforgettable sight against jagged mountain horizons.
Truth is, while originally dedicated to Lord Shiva as evidenced by detailed Mahagauri and Bhairava lintel reliefs, the main sanctum currently houses stone idols of Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita. Archaeological Survey of India has restored the carved porticos and stone staircases leading to the upper rock terraces.

Because like Ellora in Maharashtra, the entire 15 temple complex was carved out of a single monolithic sandstone rock ridge in the 8th century.
Historians attribute the temples to the 8th century Yashovarman reign or Jalandhara rulers, while folklore attributes them to the Pandavas.
