Chamunda Devi Temple, revered as Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham, is a 700 year old sacred shrine standing on the scenic banks of the Baner River, 15 km from Dharamshala. Set against the massive snow clad wall of the Dhauladhar range, it is one of the most venerated Shakti shrines in Himachal Pradesh.
According to the Durga Saptashati scripture, Goddess Ambika assumed the wrathful form of Chamunda to vanquish the fierce demon generals Chanda and Munda. The sanctum sanctorum encloses the consecrated idol wrapped in scarlet silk, where priests perform daily tantric and Vedic rituals.
Truth is, right behind the main shrine lies a natural stone cave housing a holy Shiva Lingam worshipped as Lord Nandikeshwar. Pilgrims step down the wide stone ghats to take a purifying holy dip in the crystal cold waters of Baner river before lining up for morning Aarti.
