Lakshmi Ashram, formally named Kasturba Mahila Utthan Mandal, is a pioneering Gandhian educational center located about 1 kilometer from Kausani market. Founded in 1946 by Catherine Hillman (fondly known as Sarla Behn), an English disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, the ashram is dedicated to the social and educational empowerment of Kumaoni women.
The center operates on foundational Gandhian principles of Nai Talim (basic self reliant education), non violence, and sustainable mountain agriculture. Girls and young women from remote Himalayan villages live and study here, mastering organic farming, animal husbandry, spinning, and environmental leadership alongside formal schooling.
Visitors can tour the ashram premises to witness traditional khadi spinning wheels (charkhas), handloom weaving workshops, and extensive community vegetable gardens managed entirely by the resident students.
The ashram grounds are enveloped by fragrant pine and deodar forests, offering a deeply reflective and peaceful atmosphere with clear views of the snow crested peaks of Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli.
Positioned on a quiet hillside in Kausani, Lakshmi Ashram offers a meaningful cultural and social insight into the living grassroots heritage of Uttarakhand.
