Mukhwas Village (also revered as Mukhba) is a sacred high altitude pilgrimage hamlet built on the sunny mountain slopes across the Bhagirathi River, roughly 1 km from Harsil in Uttarkashi district. Celebrated across the Hindu world as the winter home of Goddess Ganga, this heritage village is the ancestral home of the Semwal Brahmin priests who perform daily rituals at Gangotri Dham.
Every year on the auspicious day of Bhai Dooj (following Diwali), when the high Gangotri temple closes due to heavy winter snow, the consecrated idol of Maa Ganga is brought down in a grand palanquin procession to the ancient wooden Ganga Temple in Mukhba for six months of winter worship. Pilgrims touring northern Uttarakhand visit the carved deodar wood temple to receive Ganga darshan amidst snow covered apple orchards and traditional slate roofed Garhwali houses.
Truth is, the tranquil mountain air and sweet fragrance of drying apples make the short walk from Harsil magical. The village temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM with free entry for all devotees.
The best months to visit Mukhwas Village are from April to June for summer walks and November to March to experience winter Ganga darshan in the snow.
