Harsil

Harsil is an idyllic high altitude valley hamlet and apple growing haven situated along the turquoise Bhagirathi River at an elevation of roughly 2,620 meters (8,600 feet) in Harsil, along the highway to Gangotri Dham. Famed for its fragrant apple orchards, dense deodar forests, and whispering mountain streams, this pristine Himalayan valley offers a serene escape in Uttarkashi district.

Historically popularized in the nineteenth century by British pioneer Frederick E. Wilson ('Pahari Wilson') who introduced commercial apple farming and timber trade here, Harsil features traditional Bhotia wood and slate houses in neighboring villages like Bagori and Dharali. Pilgrims and nature lovers traveling across northern Uttarakhand stay here to acclimatize before visiting Gangotri, explore suspension bridges, and hike to Sattal and Wilson Cottage.
