Raghunathji Temple (also celebrated as Thirukkandam) is one of the revered 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu, perched high above the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers in Devprayag, Uttarakhand. Believed to have been originally established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD and later expanded by Garhwal kings, this grand stone temple is one of the oldest Lord Rama shrines in northern India.
Constructed from colossal dressed stone blocks combining Buddhist, Nagara, and Dravidian architectural influences, the main sanctum houses a 6 foot tall black granite deity of Lord Rama standing in deep meditative posture. Surrounding shrines within the temple courtyard honor Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, Lord Hanuman, and Garuda. Pilgrims climb through ancient stone alleyways from the holy Sangam ghats to offer prayers and receive sanctified tulsi leaves.
Truth is, viewing the turquoise confluence of Ganga far below while listening to Sanskrit hymns resonating against thousand year old stone walls is awe inspiring. It remains a crowning spiritual treasure in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas.
