The Confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda is the sacred birthplace of the holy River Ganga, situated in the ancient spiritual town of Devprayag in Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of 830 meters (2,723 feet), this revered river sangam is the foremost of the sacred Panch Prayags of Garhwal, where the turbulent, teal green waters of the Bhagirathi meet the calm, greyish blue flows of the Alaknanda to officially form the mighty Ganga.

Locally, the Bhagirathi is affectionately referred to as the 'Sas' (mother in law) due to its fierce, roaring currents, while the calm Alaknanda is called the 'Bahu' (daughter in law). Carved stone bathing ghats equipped with secure iron safety chains allow pilgrims to take a holy dip in the invigorating confluence waters and perform ancestral tarpan rituals. From the town's high pedestrian suspension bridges, travelers can distinctly see the two vibrant water colors merging into a single powerful stream.
Truth is, watching two colossal Himalayan rivers crash together with sheer force while chanting priests ring brass bells at sunset is deeply striking. It represents the supreme spiritual geographic landmark of Uttarakhand.
The best months to visit the Devprayag Sangam are from September to June when river colors are vivid and water conditions are safe.
