Virupaksha Cave

Ramana Maharshi's 17 Year Silent Penance (1899, 1916)

At the age of twenty, young Ramana Maharshi moved up to Virupaksha Cave, spending nearly two decades in profound inward meditation and silent Self inquiry.

It was here that his mother Alagammal joined him, and where landmark spiritual texts like 'Who Am I?' (Nan Yar) were penned on paper for visiting disciples.

The 13th Century Saint Virupaksha Deva Samadhi

Saint Virupaksha: Centered inside the inner cavern is the sacred tomb shrine of Saint Virupaksha Deva, whose mortal form dissolved into ash here in the 1200s.

OM Shaped Contour: The natural bedrock ceiling and walls curve precisely in the geometric pattern of the Sanskrit pranava OM sound.

Skandashram Trek: A scenic stone staircase continues up the slope from Virupaksha Cave to Skandashram, where Ramana Maharshi stayed from 1916 to 1922.
