Arunachaleswarar Annamalaiyar Temple in Tiruvannamalai (celebrated globally as one of the largest, most architecturally colossal, and spiritually monumental temple complexes in India, venerated as the supreme Agni / Fire element shrine among the sacred Pancha Bhoota Sthalams where Lord Shiva manifested as a boundless cosmic pillar of fire), situated at the eastern foot of Holy Mount Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, is one of the most venerated Saivite pilgrimage sanctuaries in world heritage.

The Agni Lingam: Sacred Pancha Bhoota Sthalam of Fire

In Hindu theology, Lord Shiva manifested as a boundless lingam of fiery light (Jyotirlinga) to humble the pride of Brahma and Vishnu, with Mount Arunachala itself worshipped as the physical embodiment of this fire.

Inside the cool, incense fragrant inner sanctum, priests perform elaborate abhishekams with holy water, sandalwood paste, milk, and bilva leaves before the glowing Agni Lingam.

The 217 Foot Rajagopuram & Thousand Pillared Hall

11 Tier Eastern Gopuram: Begun by Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya in the early 16th century and completed by Sevappa Nayaka, it is one of the tallest temple towers in India.

Thousand Pillared Mandapam: This grand hall features hundreds of sculpted granite columns and houses the sacred underground Patala Lingam vault.

Karthigai Deepam Festival & The 14 km Girivalam

Karthigai Deepam: Every November/December, over 3 million pilgrims gather as the massive holy flame is lit atop the 2,668 foot peak of Mount Arunachala, visible for 30 km.

14 km Girivalam: Devotees walk barefoot around the 14 kilometer perimeter of Mount Arunachala, praying at eight cardinal lingam shrines along the route.
