Mamara Guhai on Holy Mount Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai (celebrated across Tamil Nadu and global spiritual circles as the 'Mango Tree Cave', situated on the lower eastern slopes of the holy mountain where enlightened sage Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi lived during the scorching summer months between 1899 and 1900, shaded by an ancient sacred mango tree overlooking the temple towers of Sri Annamalaiyar), situated in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, is one of Mount Arunachala's most peaceful, historically revered, and spiritually powerful rock hermitages.

Steeped in medieval Saivite mysticism, this rock cut cavern was initially sanctified in the 16th century by Saint Guhai Namasivaya (a revered Virasaiva saint from Karnataka who performed intense tapas on Arunachala and composed immortal Tamil devotional hymns), before serving centuries later as the tranquil shelter for young Ramana Maharshi following his initial stay at Gurumoortham and Pavazhakunru.

Ramana Maharshi's Summer Hermitage (1899, 1900)

During the hot summer months of 1899 and 1900, young Ramana Maharshi shifted from Virupaksha Cave to Mamara Guhai to seek the refreshing shade of the ancient mango tree.

It was here that early devotees like Palaniswami served the young sage and where visitors experienced profound inner silence merely sitting in his divine presence.

Truth is, resting inside the cool rock cave while mountain winds whisper through the trees brings immediate mental stillness.

16th Century Legacy of Saint Guhai Namasivaya

Saint Namasivaya: Saint Guhai Namasivaya did intense penance in this cave, writing famous verses in praise of Lord Arunachala before attaining Samadhi nearby.

Shiva Shrine: A sacred Shiva Lingam installed by the saint continues to be worshipped inside the cave with daily oil lamps and floral offerings.
