Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple (the sacred Swayambhu Dakshinmukhi Jyotirlinga, revered as the sole south facing Shiva sanctuary on earth and celebrated worldwide for its daily pre dawn Bhasma Aarti and 900 meter Mahakal Lok corridor) on the banks of Rudra Sagar lake in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, stands as India's supreme Shaivite pilgrimage center and eternal master of time.

Unlike all other eleven Jyotirlingas which face east or north, Mahakaleshwar faces south toward the realm of Yama, establishing Lord Shiva as the supreme vanquisher of death (Mrityunjaya).

Every morning between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, the sanctum hosts the world famous Bhasma Aarti, where the deity is anointed with holy ash amidst the roar of conch shells and brass bells.
