The King Bhartrihari Penance & Vairagya Shatakam

King Bhartrihari, the scholarly stepbrother of Emperor Vikramaditya, ruled Ujjayini until the profound realization of worldly impermanence led him to surrender his royal crown and become a wandering Nath ascetic.

Living in these underground rock caverns, he composed the legendary Sanskrit poetry trilogy (Shatakatraya), capturing worldly passion in Shringara Shatakam, moral conduct in Niti Shatakam, and spiritual liberation in Vairagya Shatakam.

Truth is, descending the stone stairs into the cool, silent depths of the inner cave while witnessing the glowing embers of the eternal dhuni will instill a profound sense of inner stillness.
