Jata Shankar (the sacred subterranean rock cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated for natural dripstone stalagmite formations resembling Shiva's matted hair, the hooded Seshnag rock canopy, and holy freshwater springs) in Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh, stands as Satpura's supreme Shaivite pilgrimage and natural cavern landmark.

Located inside a deep forested gorge 1.5 km north of Pachmarhi town center, this ancient natural cleft preserves centuries of Shaiva Tantric devotion, reached by descending a flight of 100 stone steps beneath towering sandstone overhangs.

It's the home of natural self formed stalagmite Shiva Lingams continuously bathed by mineral rich cave drips, an overhanging rock mass naturally shaped like the multi headed serpent Seshnag, two sacred mountain pools named Ganga and Yamuna kunds, and an intensely reverent, deeply spiritual cave ambiance filled with the echoing chants of Har Har Mahadev, the soothing sound of subterranean water droplets, and the fragrant aroma of camphor, dhoop, and fresh bilva leaves.

The Bhasmasur Mythological Refuge & Seshnag Canopy

According to Puranic legend, Lord Shiva sought refuge inside this subterranean cavern while fleeing the demon Bhasmasur, who attempted to test his deadly ash turning touch upon the Lord himself.

As Shiva entered the rock fissure, strands of his divine hair (Jata) brushed against the ceiling and turned to stone, creating the unique stalagmite pillars that devotees worship today.

Truth is, descending into the cool, shaded stone cavern while natural mountain water drops fall upon the ancient lingam will fill you with peace.

Handi Khoh Canyon, Pandav Caves & Bee Fall
