Few Indian mosques match the scale and calm of Bhopal's Taj ul Masajid. The name translates to the Crown of Mosques, and it claims a spot among the largest places of worship in the country. Shah Jahan Begum, the Bhopal ruler, began the work in the late 1800s, and it stands as a red sandstone landmark in the old city.
Three great onion domes and twin minarets rise over the complex, done in a Mughal idiom. Pink and red sandstone wrap the walls, and the front opens onto a wide courtyard that fills with worshippers on Fridays.
Building the mosque proved a marathon. Shah Jahan Begum laid the foundation during her reign, but work stalled for long stretches and only reached completion decades later under her family. The result blends the old Mughal love of symmetry with the generosity of Bhopal's lake city setting.
Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and the site pairs naturally with other stops in Bhopal. Keep a pair of covered shoulders and shoes off before stepping inside, out of respect.
Taj ul Masajid sits in the heart of old Bhopal.
