Jain Museum or Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain Kala Sangrahalaya (the historic sculpture gallery established in 1987 in the Eastern Group of Temples, celebrated for housing over 100 masterwork 10th to 12th century Chandela stone sculptures of all 24 Jain Tirthankaras, Yakshinis, and celestial Gandharvas) in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, stands as central India's supreme medieval Jain iconographic and archaeological landmark.
Situated inside the tranquil Eastern Temple enclosure beside the famous Parshvanatha and Adinatha temples, this open air museum was inaugurated during the millennium celebrations of Khajuraho to safeguard priceless stone artifacts unearthed across the ancient Chandela kingdom.
It's the home of intricately carved black basalt and buff sandstone statues of Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), Lord Parshvanatha shaded by seven headed serpent canopies, Lord Mahavira in deep meditation postures, gracefully sculpted Yakshinis including Ambika and Chakreshwari, ornate circular stone panels illustrating Jain cosmology, and an intensely peaceful, deeply scholarly museum ambiance filled with monastic quietude, soft garden breezes, and centuries of spiritual art history.
It represents a rich Madhya Pradesh Chandela dynastic art heritage apex, Digambara Jain philosophy, and temple sculpture tourism where sacred museums, UNESCO Western Group temples, Lakshmana Temple carvings, and Archaeological Museum galleries unite in the Jain Museum.
Located in the Eastern Group of Temples complex, it sits 1.5 km from Khajuraho Bus Stand, 6 km from Khajuraho Railway Station (KURJ), 4 km from Khajuraho Airport (HJR), and 2 km from the Western Group of Temples, easily reached on foot, by rented bicycle, auto, or taxi.
Commissioned by wealthy Jain merchant guilds during the golden reign of the Chandela kings, these sculptures showcase the pinnacle of medieval Indian stone chiseling.
Visitors can closely study the tranquil facial expressions of meditative Tirthankaras, the delicate jewelry of celestial attendants, and circular stone mandalas detailing ancient Jain geography and cosmic cycles.
Truth is, standing before the perfectly preserved 1,000 year-old idol of Lord Parshvanatha while taking in the calm garden atmosphere is a deeply meditative experience.
