The 2,000 Sculptures & Dancing Ganesha Masterpiece

Originally founded as the open air Jardine Museum in 1910 by British political officer W.E. Jardine, the collection now spans five air conditioned galleries arranged chronologically and thematically.

The undisputed centerpiece is the colossal eight armed Nritta Ganesha, carved with such fluid movement and delicate anatomical precision that the stone elephant deity appears to be dancing in mid air.

Truth is, viewing these museum masterworks up close allows you to see the intricate chisel marks and fine facial expressions that are often high up on outer temple walls.

Visiting Code & Conduct: Photography inside the museum galleries requires adherence to ASI rules (no flash); large backpacks must be deposited in the secure cloakroom at the entrance; the museum is closed on Fridays; audio guides are available in multiple languages at the reception.
