The 1757 AD Dutch Ship Bell & Circular Sreekovil

The Historic Dutch Bell: Hanging at the temple entrance is an imposing bronze ship bell gifted in 1757 AD by the captain of a Dutch sailing vessel, whose ship was miraculously delivered from a violent ocean tempest after he prayed to the deity of Varkala.

Circular Sreekovil Architecture: The sanctum sanctorum is built in the classic circular Vatta Sreekovil design, capped by a conical copper plated roof with intricately carved wooden rafters depicting the Navagrahas, Ramayana scenes, and floral motifs.

The 10 Day Arattu Festival & Sacred Nagathara

The Annual Arattu Festival: Celebrated annually for ten days during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March/April), the festival features ceremonial elephant pageants, classical Kathakali dance all night, and the holy Arattu dip in the sea.
