Thrissur Zoo

Thrissur Zoo (celebrated as the State Museum and Zoological Garden), situated within a lush 13.5 acre botanical compound in Chembukkavu just 2 km northeast of Swaraj Round in Thrissur in Kerala, is one of India's oldest zoological gardens and Kerala's premier urban wildlife education center.

Established in 1885 during the reign of the Maharaja of Cochin, this historic scientific enclave smoothly combines an open canopy zoological sanctuary, an acclaimed Natural History Museum, an Art Museum showcasing ancient royal artifacts, a specialized Reptile House, and a shaded botanical garden teeming with centuries old heritage trees.

It's the home of rare and endangered wildlife including Asiatic lions, Royal Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, bonnet macaques, Nilgiri langurs, and lion tailed macaques, a dedicated King Cobra and python serpentarium, an expansive walk through avian enclave housing flamingos, pelicans, and Great Indian Hornbills, the royal metal and woodcraft art gallery displaying antique swords and Kathakali mannequins, and tranquil cobbled walking tracks.

Located in Chembukkavu along Museum Road, it sits just 2.5 km from Thrissur Railway Station (TCR) and KSRTC Central Bus Station, and 53 km from Cochin International Airport (COK), easily accessible by auto rickshaw, city bus, or taxi.

The 1885 Zoological Enclosure & Endangered Primates

Founded over 138 years ago by the Cochin royal administration, the zoo was designed to build public awareness about indigenous Indian fauna.

The sanctuary is especially celebrated for its conservation breeding of endemic Western Ghats primates, including the endangered lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur.

Truth is, the dense shade of towering mahogany, teak, and gulmohar trees keeps the walkways cool and refreshing even during warm tropical afternoons.

The Reptile House & Avian Sanctuary

The Serpentarium: Opened in 1972, the specialized reptile house features glass paneled climate enclosures housing venomous King Cobras, Indian rock pythons, kraits, and monitor lizards.

Free Flight Aviaries: Bird enthusiasts can observe colorful parakeets, rosy pelicans, painted storks, white peacocks, and eagles flying across spacious mesh enclosures.

The Natural History Museum & Royal Art Gallery

Art Museum & Weapons Gallery: Adjacent to the zoo, the museum houses antique bronze sculptures, royal ivory carvings, traditional musical instruments, and antique swords from the Cochin kingdom.

Zoological Specimen Collection: The natural history section features taxidermy specimens of rare wildlife, fossil remains, and ancient rock formations documenting Kerala's geographical evolution.
