Thiruvilwamala

Thiruvilwamala (celebrated for the ancient Sree Vilwadrinatha Temple and the miraculous Punarjani Guha cave), majestically situated on a peaceful granite hillock on the southern banks of the holy Bharathapuzha (Nila River) just 45 km northeast of Thrissur in Kerala, is one of Central Kerala's most sacred, historically exalted, and spiritually enigmatic pilgrimage sanctuaries.

According to ancient legends, the temple was consecrated by Lord Parasurama to liberate the wandering souls of warrior ancestors, while Sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar later discovered the hidden deity under a sacred Vilwa (bael) tree, giving the hill its name Thiruvilwamala.

The temple architecture features two distinct circular sanctums enclosed by a massive granite wall (Chuttambalam), where traditional oil lamps illuminate copper plated roofs and delicate timber carvings of the Dashavatara.

Truth is, worshipping both Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana in a single pradakshina is believed to bring immense family harmony, mental peace, and protection from life hardships.

The Mystical Punarjani Guha Cave Crawling Ritual

Punarjani Noozhal Ritual: Located 2 km from the temple on a rocky hill ridge is Punarjani Guha, a 150 meter-long natural granite tunnel; legend says it was built by celestial architect Viswakarma on the advice of Brihaspati.

Ekadasi Liberation: On Guruvayur Ekadasi (in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, Nov/Dec), hundreds of male devotees perform the arduous crawl through the dark narrow cavern from one end to the other to attain freedom from the cycle of rebirths (Punarjanmam).
