Kerala Kalamandalam

Kerala Kalamandalam (celebrated as the premier Deemed University of Art and Culture and the cradle of Kathakali), situated along the tranquil banks of the sacred Bharathapuzha (Nila River) in Cheruthuruthy just 30 km north of Thrissur in Kerala, stands as India's foremost academy for classical Indian performing arts.

The 1930 Vallathol Vision & Gurukula Education System

When classical temple arts were facing near extinction in the early 20th century, poet Vallathol organized lottery drives and national appeals to build this haven of traditional heritage.

Students live on campus under strict Gurukulam discipline, waking at 4:30 AM to undergo eye exercises (Kannu Sadhakam), rigorous body massages with herbal oils (Uzichil), and rigorous rhythm training under living masters.

The Grand Koothambalam: Built strictly according to ancient Vastu Vidya and Natyashastra treatises, the temple theatre features polished teak pillars, stone sculptures of the 108 classical dance poses, and acoustic ceilings.
