Sree Krishna Swami Temple

Sree Krishna Swami Temple (celebrated as the ancient Thodupuzha Sree Krishna Swami Temple), beautifully situated on the holy southern banks of the Thodupuzha River right in the town center of Thodupuzha in Kerala, is one of Central Kerala's oldest, most revered, and spiritually uplifting Krishna pilgrimage sanctums.

It's the home of an exquisite copper roofed circular sanctum sanctorum (Vatta Sreekovil) housing the self manifested stone idol of Lord Krishna, beautiful traditional Kerala mural frescoes and intricate wooden timber carvings depicting episodes from the Srimad Bhagavatam, the sacred river bathing ghat (Arattu Kadavu) where pilgrims take ritual cleansing baths, the grand annual 8 day Utsavam festival celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February/March) with majestic elephant processions and Panchavadyam, and daily offerings of sweetened butter (Vennacharthu) and hot Palpayasam.

The 1,000 Year-Old Unnikrishna Idol & Vatta Sreekovil

According to local temple sthalapurana, the divine idol of infant Krishna was discovered on the river sandbanks by a pious Brahmin sage and consecrated according to strict Vaikhanasa Agama rites.

The architectural layout features a circular copper plated Vatta Sreekovil surrounded by a stone Chuttambalam lined with hundreds of bronze oil lamps (Vilakkumadom) that illuminate the courtyard at dusk.

Truth is, attending the evening Deeparadhana as conch shells sound and thousands of golden oil lamps glow against the flowing river provides deep inner peace.

The Grand Kumbham Utsavam & River Arattu

The 8 Day Annual Festival: The temple festival commences with solemn flag hoisting (Kodiyettam) in Kumbham (Feb/Mar), featuring daily cultural performances of Kathakali, Ottamthullal, and classical Carnatic music concerts.

Midnight River Arattu: On the final auspicious Thiruvonam star day, the deity is carried atop a caparisoned tusker accompanied by classical Melam orchestras to the Thodupuzha River ghat for the holy Arattu immersion bath.
