Kanjirapuzha Dam

Kanjirapuzha Dam (celebrated across Kerala as one of the state's most scenic, peaceful, and visually dramatic earthen masonry reservoir getaways), tucked beneath the towering evergreen Vettilachola hills of the Western Ghats just 38 km northwest of Palakkad town and 13 km from Mannarkkad in Kerala, stands as a captivating eco tourism, picnic, and reservoir sanctuary.

Constructed across the pristine Kanjirapuzha River (a sparkling mountain tributary of the Thuthapuzha and River Bharathappuzha), this 2,128 meter-long composite dam (comprising an earthen embankment with a central masonry spillway) was commissioned in 1980 to provide extensive irrigation for over 24,000 acres of agricultural farmland across the Palakkad and Malappuram plains.

It's the home of an expansive sapphire reservoir encircled by the dense tropical rainforests of the Vettilachola mountain range, beautifully landscaped garden lawns and children's amusement parks maintained by the Irrigation Department, a scenic hillside fish breeding center (Fisheries Farm) and freshwater aquarium, tree shaded paved walking promenades along the reservoir bund offering panoramic mountain reflections, and refreshing mountain breezes descending from the Silent Valley National Park buffer zone.

Located in Kanjirapuzha village near Chirakkalpadi along the Palakkad Mannarkkad-Kozhikode highway (NH 966 corridor), it sits just 34 km from Palakkad Junction Railway Station (PGT), 40 km from Palakkad Fort, and 85 km from Calicut International Airport (CCJ), easily accessible by regular town buses, auto rickshaws, and private cars.

Rising behind the reservoir waters, the dense Vettilachola hills remain covered in mist clad evergreen canopies that shelter wild elephants, deer, and rare hornbills.

Fisheries Breeding Station: Managed by the Department of Fisheries, the on site hatchery and fish farm produce freshwater fingerlings (Rohu, Katla, and Tilapia) and operate a freshwater aquarium.
