Oachira

Oachira (celebrated across India as the sacred home of the ancient Oachira Parabrahma Temple and the supreme sanctuary of formless universal cosmic divinity), situated along the Kollam Alappuzha highway in Oachira town just 32 km north of Kollam city in Kerala, is one of the most unique, egalitarian, and philosophically profound Hindu pilgrimage destinations on the subcontinent.

The Formless Supreme Worship: Advaita Vedanta

At Oachira, devotees worship Parabrahma as the omnipresent cosmic reality without form, caste distinctions, or rigid priestly rituals.

The Historic Ochira Kali Mock Battle (Mithunam)

The Muddy Battlefield Duel: Held in the Malayalam month of Mithunam (June), hundreds of trained martial artists armed with wooden swords and shields engage in mock combat inside waterlogged mud plains.

Martial Arts Heritage: The duel commemorates the medieval war of 1746 where Travancore forces led by Ramayyan Dalawa annexed Kayamkulam kingdom.

The 12 Day Vrischikam Utsavam & Kudil Kettal

Living in Palm Huts: During the Vrischikam pilgrimage (Nov/Dec), thousands of families erect temporary palm frond huts on the temple grounds, living as mendicants for 12 days.

Sacred Temple Bulls: Large ornate wooden and brass effigies of cattle (Eduppu Kaala) are pulled across the plains by thousands of chanting devotees during the festival.
