According to regional lore, an invading Pandya monarch anchored his fleet to loot the coastal treasures of Trikkanad temple.

Infuriated by the desecration, Lord Shiva opened his third eye from the sanctum, instantly turning the king's flagship into a massive black rock out in the sea.

Truth is, gazing out at the isolated black monolith standing defiant against the crashing white breakers while temple bells chime is truly spellbinding.
