Bela Church

Bela Church (celebrated across Malabar, Tulunadu, and the Konkan coast as the historic Our Lady of Sorrows Church and the oldest active Roman Catholic parish sanctuary in Kasaragod district), situated amidst rolling emerald hills in Bela near Badiadka just 15 km northeast of Kasaragod town in Kerala, is one of Kerala's most architecturally imposing, historically revered, and miraculous Christian pilgrimage shrines.

Originally established in 1790 AD by Konkani Catholic settlers fleeing religious persecution in Goa and the military campaigns of Tipu Sultan in Mangalore, the present monumental cathedral style edifice was constructed in 1892 under the Mangalore Roman Catholic Diocese, blending soaring Neo Gothic European ecclesiastical architecture with indigenous Kerala laterite stone masonry.

It's the home of an imposing 130 year-old Gothic facade featuring twin pointed spires, lancet stained glass windows depicting Biblical scenes imported from Europe, a high vaulted nave supported by polished stone colonnades, the sacred centuries old miraculous wooden statue of Mother of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa) cradling the body of Christ, the unique 300 metre-long hand carved underground rock cave grotto (Bela Guha) dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes where pilgrims walk through lit subterranean laterite tunnels for silent meditation, and the world famous annual Bela Church Feast celebrated in the first week of January drawing thousands of pilgrims across religious faiths from Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa.

The 1892 Neo Gothic Cathedral Architecture

The cathedral stands as a masterwork of 19th century church engineering, built entirely of dressed local laterite stones with high arched roofs and ribbed vaults.

The 300 Metre Hand Carved Rock Grotto (Bela Guha)

The Subterranean Cave: One of South India's most unique Catholic shrines, this 300 metre tunnel was manually excavated through solid laterite bedrock.

Lourdes Grotto: The cave terminates at a miraculous rock grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes with a natural perennial holy water spring.
