The second Pandava, Bheemasena, consecrated this temple at Puliyoor, choosing a form of Lord Vishnu as Mayapiran, the divine savior who guided and protected the Pandavas through their greatest perils.

Truth is, because Bhima was celebrated for wielding his colossal gada (mace), the mace held in the divine deity's hand at Puliyur is regarded with special spiritual power for overcoming fear and physical weakness.
