Maharani Temple, also known as the Mohineshwar Shivalaya or Rani Temple, sits atop a small green knoll right at the centre of Gulmarg. Built in 1915 by Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia, wife of the Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, this bright red roofed shrine is a signature landmark across Jammu and Kashmir.
The royal queen commissioned the Shiva shrine so she could worship without traveling down to the plains. Its elevated hillock position makes the temple visible from almost every corner of Gulmarg valley. Devotees climb a small flight of stone stairs to offer prayers before the sacred Shiva Lingam.
