Originally constructed as an essential water storage reservoir by the state irrigation department along the Jawaharlal Nehru Feeder Canal to store excess flood waters, the wetland was declared a wildlife bird sanctuary in 1986 and elevated to international Ramsar status in 2021 due to its critical ecological role in sustaining globally threatened water birds.

It's the home of the massive 12 km paved ring bund and elevated nature walking trail encircling the entire freshwater perimeter, the watchtowers and concealed bird viewing hides where birdwatchers observe over 40,000 wintering migratory waterfowl (including bar headed geese, greylag geese, northern pintails, common pochards, painted storks, and greater flamingos), the healthy populations of blue bulls (Nilgai), jungle cats, Indian foxes, and monitor lizards thriving along dense acacia scrub forests, the tranquil water lily channels reflecting golden sunrise hues, and an intensely peaceful, undisturbed wetland atmosphere where the calls of thousands of migratory birds echo across open waters.

Covering 4.11 square kilometers, Bhindawas is an artificial freshwater lake designed with a circular embankment that maintains water levels throughout the year.

Every winter between November and February, over 40,000 birds from Siberia, Central Asia, and Tibet migrate here, making it a critical great place for globally endangered species like the Egyptian Vulture and Steppe Eagle.

Truth is, standing atop the 30 foot watchtower at sunrise as thousands of geese take flight across misty waters with flapping wings is pure wonder.
