Vansda National Park

Vansda National Park (the dense 24 square-kilometer Sahyadri rainforest reserve, premier leopard habitat, and key wildlife sanctuary of the Dangs wilderness) near Surat in Gujarat, is one of Gujarat's most biodiversity rich protected jungle corridors.

Originally preserved as the private royal hunting reserve of the Maharaja of Vansda, this lush moist deciduous forest was declared a protected National Park in 1979 to safeguard rare wildlife along the Ambika River basin.

It's the home of towering Katas bamboo thickets casting deep shade across winding jungle tracks, secretive Indian leopards prowling beneath ancient teak canopies, four horned antelopes grazing on forest glades, Malabar giant squirrels leaping between wild mango branches, and over 150 species of colorful woodland birds.

It represents a rich union of Western Ghats ecology, tribal forest lore, and eco tourism conservation where protected wilderness trails, The Old Fort bastions in Surat, Dumas beach coastlines, and Jagdishchandra Bose Aquarium exhibits unite around South Gujarat.

Located near Waghai in the Sahyadri foothills, the park entrance sits roughly 90 km southeast of Surat city, 40 km east of Bilimora Railway Junction (BIM), and 100 km from Surat International Airport (STV), easily reached by road via the State Highway.

The Leopard Sanctuary, Malabar Giant Squirrels & Kilad Eco Camp

Because no commercial timber felling has occurred here since 1952, the forest canopy forms an unusually thick continuous roof that stays cool even in summer.

Wildlife spotters regularly sight striped hyenas, barking deer, jungle cats, Indian pangolins, and massive python colonies camouflaged along mossy boulders.

The adjoining Kilad Nature Campsite, managed by the Gujarat Forest Department, offers wooden treehouses, tented huts, and nature walks along the Ambika riverbank.

Truth is, birdwatchers travel here specifically to spot the Great Indian hornbill, yellow backed sunbird, and Malabar trogon during early morning hours.
