Jagdishchandra Bose Aquarium (the premier multidisciplinary marine gallery, 52 tank aquatic conservatory, and foremost family edutainment landmark of South Gujarat) in Surat in Gujarat, is one of western India's most advanced public aquariums.
Established by the Surat Municipal Corporation in the riverfront botanical park of Adajan, this 25,000 square-foot underwater facility was created to educate children and travelers about marine biodiversity across indigenous and international waterways.
It's the home of fifty two specially designed ecological tanks housing over one hundred aquatic species, gracefully gliding blacktip reef sharks, luminous jellyfish chambers, electric blue stingrays fluttering over sandy tank beds, exotic piranhas and alligator gars, and interactive touch screens guiding young students.
It represents a rich union of marine conservation, civic recreation, and aquatic science where modern public aquariums, The Old Fort battlements on the Tapi River, Sardar Patel Museum collections, and Dutch Gardens monuments unite around Surat.
Located on Hazira Surat Road in Adajan, the aquarium sits just 6 km west of Surat Railway Station (ST), 12 km north of Surat International Airport (STV), and 3 km from the landmark Cable Bridge, easily reached by auto or city bus.
The aquarium is divided into specialized zones representing freshwater rivers, brackish mangrove creeks, and deep ocean coral reefs from across the Arabian Sea and the Indo Pacific.
Visitors can observe predatory piranhas, iridescent angel fish, lionfish with venomous spines, silver dollars, and giant freshwater turtles living in climate controlled filtration ecosystems.
The central shark viewing pool offers dramatic views of juvenile reef sharks and rays during scheduled morning feeding sessions.
Truth is, the facility operates specialized biological water recycling plants that maintain precise salinity and temperature levels around the clock.
